Walking out of secret shame

Happy November everyone! I hardly read books but today while lazing in bed, I picked up a thin one and started reading it. Walking out of secret shame was written by Jennifer Heng who was my previous youth pastor. As a teenager, she went around looking for love (like many of us) and ended up having two abortions.

The first was really gruesome; it was called "induced labour" where she gave birth to a 22-week old child without painkillers. The second was the usual D&C (Dilation and Curettage). Seriously, I've never learnt so much about this taboo topic in one day.

The book talks about looking for love as a teenager, unforgiveness and how to forgive oneself. Forgiving yourself can be one of the hardest things to do, because only you can choose to do that.

In fact, recognising a problem is the hardest thing to do. You could have covered up the hurt unintentionally with retail therapy, a habit or a lifestyle. I see a lot of people these days falling into a virtual cycle of doing 'hurt' to themselves, only because they never recognized the problem within themselves. With every word of self-condemnation, one doesn't get stronger but weaker.

This book also reinforced my personal belief in sex after marriage. I don't think a lot of people subscribe to this belief anymore but being able to keep that one special thing to give to your husband when you get married is a once in a lifetime experience. Keep it for someone who you'd be spending the rest of your life with, and not to anyone who gives you love.

I don't know if you'd dare to pick up this book by yourself at a bookstore. I feel there's a negative perception here to people who buy self-help books, but really, can we choose not to care about what others think for a moment and get some help for ourselves?

Walking out of secret shame is available in all good bookstores like MPH.

PS: I finished this book in a hour :) I don't usually finish books so that should speak enormously for this books.

PSPS: If you'd like the book, e-mail me and I'll send my copy to you!
