KL diaries (Part two): 1MMSC

Last week, I went to KL for 3 days to learn about the 1 Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival (1MMSC) and witness the launch! One thing that I remembered about 1MMSC is that the GST on clothes has been waived by the government which means that all clothes are duty-free! It's pretty cool a policy to me, one that is intended to spur spending during the sale period.

Even before the sales started, mom and I started shopping. Opposite our hotel was Fahrenheit where we bought 10 hats for our family. Yes, you must be thinking, 1 head, 10 hats?!

Anyway, if you like cheap and fashionable clothes, there is Sungei Wang and Berjaya Times Square for all your shopping. Times Square is so huge that it has 10 floors of shopping! Seriously, wow. If you like branded goods, there's pavilion and Starhill Gallery on the opposite end of Bukit Bintang with the Sephora building nearby too!

On the second night, mom & I ventured further down Bukit Bintang (their Orchard Road) to Jalan Alor. This is the place where you find the famous Jalan Alor KL Hokkien Mee. This stretch of road is pretty untouched. Unlike in Singapore where the government cleans places up and transforms them into "modern" eating streets, Jalan Alor is like a roadside hawker stretch. You find old buildings around that seem close to crumbling and cars travelling up and down the battered roads. This is the charm of Jalan Alor, and the charm of Kuala Lumpur.

*Beware: Pictures of yummy food coming up!

On the last day, we attended a fashion show organised by Metrojaya at Mid Valley Mall! The bloggers and I were all looking forward to this event because Prof Dato Jimmy Choo was gracing the occasion! This was the first time I ever met and saw him in real life and he's such a gentleman! When you ask to take a photo with him, he says yes and asks you where you're from and adds a nice comment about the country! Such a gentlemen, really.

The brands that presented at the fashion show included Laura Ashley, East India Company and Malaysian brands Yin & Yang and more! A special part of the show was the 'Raya special' where models, adults and children, walked down in Hari Raya festive wear! I've never seen this happen in Singapore because malays are the minority here but not at Malaysia! I enjoyed seeing modernized traditional wear on the runway. It was so different from seeing westernized clothes which were the usual!

Thank you Tourism Malaysia for inviting me for the 1MMSC launch! The 1 Malaysia Mega Sale lasts till 2 September, much longer than ours because it coincides with Hari Raya and the other events like the 1Malaysia International Tourism Night Floral Parade.
