July First

Hi guys! I've finally gotten my internet up after a long time and tonnes of miscommunication. Whatever it is, I'm so happy to finally have stable internet 24/7. Yes, this is the new generation.

Anyway, today was Hong Kong's establishment day which is kind of like our National Day back home. I say 'kind of' because it is the day Hong Kong was handed back to China after a 99 year lease with Britain ended and in short, they dislike the government and decided to protest. This year, 430 000 people took to the streets which forced the closing of a few major roads.

My friends and I wanted to go see the protests at Victoria Park but when we found out there was a typhoon warning signal 3 (not scary) and that they were walking down towards our area, we decided to just shop and see them pass by.

What I admire about them is that they dare (and probably can) speak out against their government. They questioned their chief executive (like governor) in the riots and have even done polls on how many people currently have confidence in his leadership. That's very fresh for me, since Singapore hardly allows anything like this. That reminds me that I saw a Falun Gong protest going on right outside my church that day. If this was Singapore, nooooo that would not happen.

Anyway, I'm having a 5 day weekend because at SCAD, we don't have school on Fridays. It is reserved for project meetings instead but this was only week one of school so... hehe. Today was a holiday and tomorrow, I don't have school as my teachers will be out of town. But yes, I'd have to have make-up class :'( So, I spent much of my weekend with my Singaporean friends, Jeralyn and Cheng Liang! Jeralyn just got here on Saturday for summer school at Chinese University of Hong Kong. We followed her all the way to Shatin to help her check into her hall and see her place. Wow, it was seriously far but the malls there was still really classy!

By the way, I tried Pierre Herme's macaroons today! Yes, they have both Laduree and Pierre Herme in Hong Kong :) You have to buy a minimum of 7 for a price of HKD210. The macaroons were crunchy initially and started to get softer later into the day. The cream is so rich and smooth while the crust was crispy. Somehow, I prefer my macaroons chewy and the best I have had so far are my sister-in-law's. Oh well, that maxed out my sugar intake for the month so I better stop talking about these sweet stuff!

Anyway, I just sent out my first monthly e-postcard from Hong Kong! If you'd like to sign up for the next one, simply join here. Enjoy your week pals ;) xx.
