AFF 2013: Chalayan

Yesterday, Audi Fashion Festival closed with the legendary Chalayan. I always thought of Chalayan as a architect/designer but yesterday's show widened my perspective on his work.

The pieces I loved the most were those that involved the use of colour. The prints on the jacket above were just beautiful. They were like fragments of paintings placed together. For me, it was a fresh use of digital prints. (yes, my favorite word now is fresh)

Then there were pieces with two-toned organza that was constructed to give an organic shape. The garment would change tones as the intensity of light varied which made it feel alive.

Chalayan also had a tie-dye like treatment to his silks which made them so youthful and full of energy without looking cheap.

But of course, the best detail of the night came from the dress above. It looked like pieces of paint were peeling off the dress, cracking from the heat and barely holding themselves together.

Chalayan put them on a pair of pants and two dresses. Simply brilliant, really! He showed me yesterday how to keep clothing new, how to go beyond the boundaries but still keeping each look wearable.

The transformer dresses were really the highlight for the night for many people but unfortunately, the models blocked my view of the transformation so I couldn't capture all of it!

Thank you Hussein Chalayan for your show last night. Your final products were inspiring by itself and taught me a lot about pushing boundaries while remaining relevant. You are my hero!
